“Crisis in Gaza: The next 48 hours are decisive for an uncertain ceasefire”

In the current context of the conflict in Gaza, Mahmoud al-Aloul, vice president of the Fatah Movement, stressed the crucial importance of the next 48 hours to assess Israel’s compliance with the United Nations Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

During a visit to Cairo, Al-Aloul expressed skepticism about Israel’s compliance with the resolution, saying he expected Israel not to follow it.

He warned against continued hostilities, citing the risk of further tragedies such as the October 7 attack, where Hamas militants targeted communities in southern Israel, leading to numerous casualties and kidnappings.

Statements by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejecting the resolution and vowing to continue the conflict have increased tensions. Al-Aloul condemned this continued violence, calling it an “extraordinary injustice” that could worsen the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Pleading for a political solution, Al-Aloul stressed the importance of a two-state solution to offer hope to the Palestinians. He called for increased support and greater involvement from Arab countries to address the critical situation in Gaza.

Al-Aloul’s visit to Egypt with members of Fatah’s central committee highlights regional efforts to resolve the crisis in Gaza. In his meetings with Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Al-Aloul stressed the imperative for international intervention and support to achieve a lasting ceasefire and pave the way for a political resolution of the conflict.
