Forest management in the province of Maniema in the Democratic Republic of Congo has become a major concern for the environmental and agro-rural civil society of Congo (SOCEARUCO). During the celebration of the International Day of Forests, these actors warned of the disastrous consequences of excessive tree cutting and deforestation in the region.
According to SOCEARUCO members, the territories of Kailo, Lubutu, Punia and RN3 are particularly affected by these destructive practices. Slash-and-burn agriculture and cutting of wood for wood energy are identified as the main factors of deforestation. This alarming situation threatens biodiversity, the food security of local populations and has repercussions on the climate of the province.
Faced with this emergency, SOCEARUCO calls for the responsibility of the authorities, donors and local populations for more rigorous management of the forest massif. Preserving ecosystems is crucial to combat deforestation and preserve a healthy environment for future generations.
The International Day of Forests, celebrated under the theme “Forests and innovation: new solutions for a better world”, highlights the importance of finding innovative solutions to protect our forests and ensure a sustainable future for the planet. It is imperative to act quickly to preserve our natural resources and preserve the ecological balance of our planet.
