Doctor Miaka Mia Bilenge Constantin
Exactly 10 years ago, on March 22, 2014, the medical community of the Democratic Republic of Congo lost one of its emblematic figures, Doctor Miaka Mia Bilenge Constantin. This visionary doctor marked the health history of the country by distinguishing himself in particular in the fight against trypanosomiasis and communicable childhood diseases.
A native of Muanga, in the province of Western Kasai, Doctor Miaka is a former student of Bulongo college where he brilliantly obtained his diploma in the literary section in 1970. Subsequently, he specialized in medicine, training in surgery and childbirth at the University of Kinshasa. His career has led him to practice in various hospitals across the country, from Kwamouth to Mbuji-Mayi, including Inongo and Bulungu.
But it is above all his commitment to the fight against trypanosomiasis which has marked the history of health in the DRC. Thanks to his expertise and determination, Dr. Miaka has contributed significantly to the development of effective strategies to counter this infectious disease. His hard work and passion for public health have made him an undisputed reference in the field.
Beyond his medical skills, Dr. Miaka was also a politically engaged man. Elected deputy in 2006, he was able to combine his medical career with a role as a political leader, putting his qualities of expression, conviction and organization at the service of his community.
His death left a huge void in the field of health in the DRC, but his legacy lives on through his research and publications which continue to inspire many researchers. His dedication, his rigor and his kindness towards his teams marked all those who had the chance to work with him.
Today, as the medical community honors Dr. Miaka for his many contributions, it is important to remember his legacy and continue working to improve public health in the DRC. His example of dedication and leadership remains a source of inspiration for future generations and a living tribute to a great man of Congolese medicine.
