“Fighting Rising Food Prices in Kano: How Decisive Action Turned the Market Around”

**Decisive action to combat rising food prices in Kano region**

In a recent telephone interview with ThePunch, Muhyi Magaji, chairman of the commission, announced that warehouse owners have been ordered to open their doors and sell their food stocks to the public.

This measure quickly had a positive impact on the local market, leading to a significant decline in food and grain prices in Kano and neighboring states.

Muhyi Magaji said: *”The action taken by the commission forced traders to put the goods on sale in the markets and reduce their prices.”*

He added: *”We visited several markets including Dawanau International Grain Market, Singer Market and Kwari Market among others. If you go to Shuwari Market in Jigawa, Faskari and other other markets in neighboring states, you will find that grain prices have declined from previous levels.”*

The closure of warehouses played a crucial role in stabilizing prices of grains and other essential commodities in the state. Magaji also dismissed claims by the Dawanau International Grain Market management that they had not stockpiled grain to create an artificial shortage.

The move comes following threats made by the state’s anti-corruption agency against traders who were stockpiling grain in a bid to maximize profits.

In response, market traders announced a drop in grain prices. This firm action made it possible to restore balance in the market and guarantee better access to food at more affordable prices for the local population.

In short, this measure taken by the commission demonstrated its effectiveness in regulating the market and helped to mitigate the impact of the price increases observed previously.
