The province of Ituri, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is the scene of a worrying increase in violence perpetrated by militias. Recently, the administrator of the territory of Djugu denounced the assassination of 15 civilians by the CODECO militia in Tali, jeopardizing the previously concluded peace agreements.
This alarming situation comes on top of attacks by ADF rebels in Irumu territory, causing deaths, injuries and house fires. Despite commitments made by the militias to no longer target civilians, violence appears to persist and local populations remain prey to terror.
Faced with this security crisis, the notable Bungishabako Katho, the civil society coordinator Dieudonné Lossa and the political scientist Casimir Ngumbi provide their analysis of the situation. They emphasize the urgency of concerted action to restore peace and stability in the region.
It is crucial to highlight these events and raise awareness of the importance of finding lasting solutions to end this devastating violence. The international community and national authorities must redouble their efforts to protect vulnerable populations and guarantee a more secure future for Ituri province.
