Sexual violence on university campuses: a frightening reality that requires our collective action

Universities are traditionally places of learning, personal growth and preparation for the future. Unfortunately, there is also a dark reality plaguing college campuses in many places around the world: sexual violence. A recent resounding verdict in the Democratic Republic of Congo has highlighted this scandalous reality.

In this shocking case, Professor Yav Musolo, a lecturer at the University of Likasi, was sentenced to ten years in prison for heinous acts of rape against several female students. This violence was denounced thanks to the courage of a student, Laetitia Kabasele, who trapped the professor by recording a WhatsApp conversation revealing the horrific details of a rape during her period. Worse still, he was caught red-handed for another rape committed on the same day on another student.

These chilling revelations highlight an alarming reality that is often hidden in the shadows of power and hierarchy within educational institutions. The despicable acts committed by Professor Yav Musolo not only shatter the trust of female students in an environment that is supposed to support them, but also raise critical questions about the protection of victims and the accountability of university authorities in the face of such abuse.

It is crucial that society as a whole mobilizes to condemn these shameful acts and to offer strong support to survivors of this violence. Silence in the face of these atrocities only encourages a cycle of fear and impunity. It is high time to face this difficult reality and put in place concrete measures to protect students and guarantee a safe environment conducive to their academic and personal development.

This incident in the Democratic Republic of Congo is unfortunately far from isolated. Across the world, sexual violence on college campuses is a sad reality. These acts of violence not only impact the lives of victims, but also compromise their educational careers and their professional future.

It is therefore imperative to continue to raise awareness on this issue and to put in place appropriate prevention policies and programs. Universities have a crucial role to play in combatting sexual violence by implementing effective reporting protocols, providing support resources to victims, and organizing awareness campaigns.

In conclusion, sexual violence on college campuses is a serious problem that requires a collective response and commitment from all. We must come together to condemn these heinous acts, support survivors and work together to create a safe and equal environment for all.
