“Reconciliation and peace in Djugu: Militias are committed to putting an end to violence and promoting peaceful cohabitation”

Reconciliation and peace are major issues in regions affected by armed conflicts. In the territory of Djugu, in Ituri, efforts are being made to promote peaceful cohabitation between the Lendu and Hema communities, formerly divided by tensions and violence.

In recent days, meetings for peace and social cohesion have been organized, bringing together hundreds of young people belonging to the CODECO (Cooperative for the Development of Congo) and Zaire militias in the sectors of Bahema Badjere, Walendu Djatsi and Ndo Okebu. These militiamen have made a commitment to put an end to abuses against civilian members of different communities.

During these meetings, these fighters reaffirmed their desire to allow the free movement of people and their goods in the area. They also encouraged people to frequent the markets of neighboring communities, thus promoting trade and economic peace.

These initiatives are the result of an awareness campaign which aims to consolidate the relative stability observed for approximately six months in the territory of Djugu. Local notables insist on the importance of support from the government and MONUSCO (United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo) to preserve the gains of this fragile peace and encourage real reconciliation.

Despite the unilateral commitment of the CODECO and Zaire militias to put an end to the violence, acts of murder, kidnapping and looting persisted in certain localities in the territory of Djugu. This led to a certain distrust between communities and people avoided going to certain places, particularly markets where tensions were most palpable.

In conclusion, although progress has been made in the process of reconciliation and pacification of the Djugu territory, it is essential to continue to support these initiatives and work for real harmony between the Lendu and Hema communities. Only a lasting and concerted commitment can guarantee their peaceful cohabitation, the free movement of people and the economic development of the region.
