“Dependency and divorce: when the truth comes out after marriage”

Divorce and drug addiction: When the truth comes out after marriage

In a recent divorce case, a woman named Joke confessed in court that she was unaware of her husband Atanda’s drug addiction before their marriage.

“I discovered that he was addicted to drugs and a smoker after we got married. All my efforts to change him failed. His parents could not dissuade him from smoking. My husband steals from me to finance his habits. He doesn’t provide for me,” she said.

In response, Atanda denied stealing his wife. However, he admitted his addiction to cigarettes. Atanda also claimed that his wife was the cause of his job loss due to her incessant criticism. He accepted his wife’s request for divorce.

The judge presiding over the case, Abdul Qadir Umar, stressed that marriage is supposed to be based on mutual understanding and must be productive. “In a situation where there are problems, divorce must be allowed,” he added.

This case raises important questions about accountability and transparency within the couple. It highlights the need to know each other before committing to marriage. Indeed, problems such as substance abuse can have a significant impact on the relationship and the stability of the marriage.

It is crucial that couples take the time to openly discuss their habits, vices and expectations before taking the step of marriage. This would help avoid bitter divorces and build strong and fulfilling relationships.

This story reminds us of the importance of communication and transparency in a marriage. Don’t hesitate to ask questions, share concerns and be open-minded. Knowing each other in good times and bad allows you to build a strong and lasting relationship.

So, before saying “yes” at the altar, take the time to get to know your partner, to discuss your habits and your expectations. A marriage based on trust and mutual understanding has every chance of succeeding and withstanding the trials of life.
