“Humanitarian crisis in North Kivu in the DRC: thousands of displaced people, human rights abuses and the urgency of assistance”

The humanitarian situation in the North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to deteriorate, with increasing numbers of displaced people and human rights abuses. A recent report released by OCHA-DRC highlights the challenges facing the region and the urgent need for humanitarian assistance.

According to this report, more than 72,000 people were displaced in several villages along the Sake-Bweremana axis. These people are now living in precarious conditions, due to overpopulation caused by the constant influx of new displaced people into the region. Additionally, more than 608,000 people received a monthly food ration in December 2023 in North Kivu, highlighting the urgency of meeting the basic needs of the affected population.

The report also highlights the resumption of clashes between armed groups in the territory of Masisi since the beginning of 2024. These clashes have led to massive population displacements and human rights abuses, with at least 26 civilians killed during attacks in several villages in Beni territory since December 15.

The protection of civilians situation also remains worrying in the Rutshuru territory, despite a lull observed at the start of the year. Kidnappings and targeted killings of civilians were reported, while a conflict between herders and farmers in the Rutshuru region led to a further deterioration of the situation.

Displacement sites, particularly in the territory of Nyiragongo and the city of Goma, are also facing security problems. Armed elements have been reported in these sites, committing kidnappings, arbitrary arrests and acts of violence against the displaced. Unfortunately, at least two displaced people have already been killed since the start of the year.

Finally, the Walikale territory was hit hard by flooding following heavy rains on January 7, 2024. More than 24,000 people were affected, with extensive material damage and loss of livelihoods. A team from the NGO MEDAIR arrived in the region to assess the situation and provide assistance to those affected.

Faced with this growing humanitarian crisis, it is crucial that the international community mobilize resources and provide emergency humanitarian assistance to alleviate the suffering of the population in North Kivu. It is also necessary to strengthen efforts to protect civilians and promote a lasting political solution to end violence and forced displacement in the region. The current situation requires coordinated and rapid action to avoid a worsening of the humanitarian crisis in the North Kivu province of the DRC.
