“Rainmakers: When reality meets mythology”
Director Kemi Akinmolayan recently shared some behind-the-scenes photos from his latest production, the documentary titled “Rainmakers,” on his Instagram account. Scheduled to release on Prime Video on March 1, 2024, the film delves into the heart of the mythology of “rainmaking” in the southern regions of Nigeria.
This ancestral practice consists of believing in the existence of people with magical powers to control the rain. Akinmolayan decided to test this belief by comparing rainmaking techniques with scientific methods during his trip to the Ogun, Oyo and Edo regions.
“I have completed all the necessary rituals and learned a lot about rainmaking and the all-powerful deity Sango… I will be sharing many exciting things as we get closer to release. is rainmaking real or just an illusion? Find out soon,” the director said on Instagram.
This collaboration with Prime Video is not new for Akinmolayan, who recently released a first children-focused project, titled “Mikolo”, on this platform. This film, shot in the mountains of Ondo State, explores themes of family, friendship, social values, love of animals and adventure. It tells the story of two teenagers going on an adventure into a mystical forest, where an ancient Yoruba myth is found.
With “Rainmakers,” Akinmolayan continues to blend reality and mythology to provide viewers with a captivating cinematic experience.
