“Apollo” hemorrhagic conjunctivitis: Kinshasa facing an epidemic
The provincial city of Kinshasa is currently facing an epidemic of hemorrhagic conjunctivitis commonly called “Apollo”. Since the end of 2023, numerous cases of this eye disease have been reported in different communes of the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
This disease, which is characterized by irritation or inflammation of the conjunctiva, the membrane that covers the white of the eye, is very contagious. It can be avoided through simple hygiene measures such as regular hand washing and avoiding rubbing your eyes with your fingers.
The Director General of the National Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB), Doctor Jean-Jacques Muyembe, stressed the importance of these measures to prevent the spread of the disease. In a message published on his X account, he recalled that the epidemic of hemorrhagic conjunctivitis was already underway at the start of 2024 and called on the population to take the necessary precautions.
It is essential to emphasize that conjunctivitis can be caused by allergies, bacterial or viral infection. It is easily transmitted by contact with the eye secretions of an infected person.
This situation highlights the importance of raising awareness among the population of the importance of hand hygiene and taking preventive measures to limit the spread of the epidemic. Health authorities are putting in place efforts to contain the disease and treat detected cases.
It is therefore recommended that everyone wash their hands regularly with soap and water, paying particular attention to the area between the fingers and nails. Additionally, it is important to avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, with unwashed hands.
In conclusion, we must remain vigilant in the face of this epidemic of “Apollo” hemorrhagic conjunctivitis in Kinshasa. By adopting good hygiene practices and staying informed of recommendations from health authorities, we can help limit the spread of disease and protect our eye health..
