The residence of Moïse Katumbi was besieged by heavily armed soldiers traveling in armored vehicles, thus creating a situation of de facto house arrest. According to Kamitatu, the encirclement of Moïse Katumbi’s residence is devoid of any legal basis and simply aims to intimidate a political leader who exercised his legitimate right to request the annulment of elections considered to be the most fraudulent in the country’s history. .
However, the governor of Haut-Katanga, Jacques Kyabula, refuted these accusations saying that it was a misstep by the security services who were seeking to restore order in Kashobwe. He said no instructions were given to restrict anyone’s freedom of movement, and once the incident was brought to their attention, they immediately ordered the encirclement to be lifted.
It is worth noting that Kashobwe has been the scene of violent protests recently, during which political party headquarters were vandalized and property destroyed. In this context, security forces have been deployed in the region to maintain order. However, recent actions seem to go beyond this mission of maintaining order and become an unjustified restriction of freedoms.
