News: Violence against women during the electoral process in the Democratic Republic of Congo
The electoral period in the Democratic Republic of Congo was marked by sad events of violence against women and young girls. These unacceptable acts were denounced by a network of Congolese women grouped within a platform for the advancement of women.
In a statement read in Kinshasa on December 27 by Sister Nathalie KANGAJ, head of this platform, Congolese women expressed their indignation at the numerous cases of violence reported during the electoral process. They demand that the perpetrators of this violence be brought to justice to answer for their actions.
The videos posted on social networks shocked the world. One of them showed a woman being beaten and stripped naked because of her vote for Moïse Katumbi in the Grand Kasaï region, more precisely in Kananga. Another video showed a human rights defender, leader of the Femme d’action structure and poll observer in Kananga, victim of an attack and stripping by men in the Apollo district.
These acts of violence are intolerable and go against the fundamental principles of respect for equality, security and dignity of all human beings, enshrined in the Congolese constitution. The Congolese women’s network calls for the involvement of the authorities and the entire population in the fight against this violence to guarantee the rights of Congolese women.
It is important that these acts do not go unpunished. By bringing perpetrators of violence to justice, the Democratic Republic of Congo will send a strong message: that violence against women will not be tolerated, and that each individual must be held responsible for their actions.
It is time to mobilize collectively to put an end to this unacceptable violence and guarantee equal rights for all Congolese women. Women are an essential pillar of society and their safety and well-being are paramount to building a better future for all.
