Partial results of the presidential election in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC): Political tensions and calls for the cancellation of the polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) recently published the partial results of the presidential election which took place on December 20. However, these results caused strong political tensions and were contested by the opposition.

According to the results published by the CENI, out of a total of more than 3.2 million votes cast, candidate Felix Tshisekedi comes first with 78.8% of the votes, followed by Moise Katumbi with 17.3% and Martin Fayulu in third position with 1.6%. These partial results were obtained from 82 constituencies, including those in the diaspora.

However, the opposition strongly contested the results, calling them “chaotic” and claiming they were marred by massive fraud. Some polling stations were even opened beyond the legal deadline for voting, which raised doubts about the legitimacy of the ballots.

In this tense context, the call for the cancellation of the polls has intensified. The opposition is purely and simply calling for the cancellation of all the elections of December 20, believing that the electoral process was compromised by the irregularities and dysfunctions observed.

Faced with these protests, the CENI reaffirmed the importance of the participation of all Congolese in the vote, while recognizing the problems encountered during the electoral process. This situation raises questions about the transparency and legitimacy of the published results.

It is essential that these issues are handled fairly and transparently in order to preserve democracy in the DRC. Measures must be taken to strengthen the confidence of the Congolese people in the electoral process and guarantee free and fair elections.

It is also important that the international community closely monitors developments in the DRC and encourages an inclusive dialogue between all political actors in order to reach consensus and find a peaceful solution to this political crisis.

In conclusion, the partial results of the presidential election in the DRC led to political tensions and protests from the opposition. It is crucial that measures are taken to ensure the transparency and legitimacy of the electoral process, as well as to encourage inclusive dialogue between all political actors. Stability and democracy in the DRC depend on it.
