Detention of political opponent in DRC raises growing concerns over his state of health

The national president of the political party Ensemble pour la République, Moïse Katumbi, recently drew public attention to the deteriorating state of health of his special advisor, Salomon Idi Kalonda, currently in detention. This alert was launched during a press conference which took place just after a meeting at the Sainte Thérèse de N’djili field in Kinshasa.

Moïse Katumbi expressed his frustration by stating that he was repeatedly prevented from visiting Salomon Idi Kalonda, making the situation even more worrying. He also called on the head of state to obtain the release of this opponent.

Salomon Idi Kalonda was arrested on May 30 at N’Djili international airport, following accusations of alleged intelligence with the enemy of the DRC. Since then, he has been incarcerated at the Ndolo military prison in Kinshasa.

This situation raises questions about respect for human rights and freedom of expression in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The prolonged detention and lack of access to appropriate health care for Salomon Idi Kalonda highlights the challenges faced by political opponents in the country.

It is important that public opinion remains vigilant and demands concrete actions to guarantee respect for fundamental rights and justice for all citizens, including political opponents. The release of Salomon Idi Kalonda and his access to appropriate medical care should be priorities to ensure a more just and democratic society in the DRC.
