16 days of activism against gender-based violence: An essential fight for equality in the DRC

The 16 days of activism against gender-based violence: a crucial debate for Congolese society

Every year, from November 25 to December 10, the international community celebrates 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. This event, initiated in 1991, aims to raise awareness, inform and promote the fight against all forms of violence against women and girls around the world.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), this campaign is of particular importance. Indeed, the country faces many challenges in terms of gender-based violence, including sexual violence, domestic violence and forced marriages. These practices are deeply rooted in Congolese society and represent a major obstacle to the development and fulfillment of women and girls.

During the 16 days of activism, numerous Congolese and international organizations are mobilizing to raise awareness, denounce violence and promote gender equality. Conferences, debates, demonstrations and awareness campaigns are organized throughout the country. The objective is to give a voice to women and girls victims of violence, to break taboos and change mentalities.

This year, the theme chosen for the campaign is “Gender equality: a requirement for sustainable development”. It highlights the importance of gender equality in all areas of society to ensure sustainable and equitable development. Women and girls must have the same opportunities and rights as men, economically, politically and socially.

To achieve this goal, it is necessary to strengthen laws and mechanisms for the protection of women, promote their economic empowerment, improve access to education and health and combat gender stereotypes.

The fight against gender-based violence is a fight that requires the commitment of everyone. Governments, civil society organizations, the media and the general population must work together to eliminate these practices and build a more just and equal society.

The 16 days of activism against gender-based violence offer a unique opportunity to mobilize awareness, promote change and advance the rights of women and girls in the DRC. It is important to take advantage of this period to make our voices heard and advance the fight against gender-based violence.

In conclusion, the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence are a valuable opportunity to raise awareness, inform and promote gender equality in the DRC. They remind us that the fight against violence against women and girls is a collective fight and that it is essential to continue working for a more just and egalitarian world.
