The importance of strengthening the national army in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) faces numerous security challenges, with the presence of uncontrolled foreign armed forces and militias on its territory. This complex situation endangers the sovereignty of the country and requires urgent measures to strengthen the Congolese national army.
To ensure the security and protection of the sovereignty of the DRC, it is essential to recruit one million Congolese soldiers, ensuring that they come exclusively from sources independent of armed groups. At the same time, it is imperative to implement a complete demobilization of all those who have been involved, directly or indirectly, in rebellions, militias or massacres on Congolese soil.
Another essential measure is to initiate early retirement for all those who have ties to aggressor countries, without exception. A clear and official separation between the DRC, Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi and South Sudan is necessary to avoid any harmful interference in Congolese affairs. Preserving the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the DRC must be an absolute priority.
With this in mind, President Félix Tshisekedi chaired the signing ceremony of the agreement establishing the status of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) force which will be deployed in the DRC. This regional force will support the Congolese army in its fight against armed groups disrupting peace and security in the country, such as the M23.
It is, however, crucial to emphasize that the responsibility for bringing peace to the DRC lies primarily with the Congolese themselves. No other country can solve the internal problems of the DRC for them. This requires strong commitment, careful consideration and courageous decisions by Congolese leaders to reorganize and strengthen their national army.
In summary, the complex security situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo requires rapid and decisive actions to improve and strengthen the national army. Recruiting competent Congolese soldiers, demobilizing armed groups and maintaining a clear separation with neighboring countries are essential measures. Congolese involvement is essential to establishing peace and stability in the country, while SADC support can play a crucial role in this process.
