The resumption of humanitarian flights in Niger: a breath of hope in the post-coup crisis

The resumption of humanitarian flights in Niger: a ray of hope in the post-coup context

Since the coup that toppled President Mohamed Bazoum in July this year, Niger has been plunged into a political and humanitarian crisis. However, a glimmer of hope appeared recently, with the announcement of the resumption of humanitarian flights by the UN. This crucial decision will allow the delivery of medical products and the transport of sick people and humanitarian personnel in the country.

UNHAS, the United Nations humanitarian air service, suspended its flights after the coup, due to the complications and uncertainties that reigned at the time. But now, thanks to discussions with the Nigerien authorities, modalities of intervention acceptable to all parties have been agreed.

According to Jean-Noël Gentile, director of the World Food Program (WFP) in Niger, it is essential to maintain these humanitarian movements to meet the needs of more than 4.3 million people dependent on humanitarian aid in the country. Among them, more than 3 million are in acute food insecurity. UNHAS air missions play a crucial role in transporting food, medicines and medical equipment to the most remote areas.

The figures for 2023 demonstrate the scale of UNHAS activity in Niger. With 173 humanitarian organizations registered and approved as users of the air service, approximately 1,360 passengers are transported each month, as well as 2.4 tonnes of medical cargo. The routes cover several destinations, including Diffa, Maradi, Zinder, Agadez and Tahoua, making it possible to reach the areas most affected by the crisis.

In a context where the Nigerien authorities are aware of the importance of these humanitarian flights, the support of the UN through UNHAS is essential to maintain humanitarian operations on the ground. This demonstrates the continued commitment of the international community to the people of Niger.

In conclusion, the resumption of humanitarian flights in Niger marks a step forward in relief and aid efforts for the Nigerien population. UNHAS plays a vital role in delivering the resources needed for the survival of the most vulnerable people. Let us hope that this just decision continues to lead to effective and long-term humanitarian actions.
