Intercommunity violence in the DRC in the run-up to the elections: how to prevent these conflicts?

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is facing an increase in intercommunal violence, particularly in the province of Katanga. Over the past 48 hours, four people have lost their lives in Malemba Nkulu, victims of these deadly clashes. This violence was sparked after the murder of a motorcycle taxi driver by individuals believed to be from the Kasai region. In retaliation, the victim’s relatives attacked members of the Kasai community residing in Malemba Nkulu.

According to several sources, the tension between the nationals of Katanga and those of Kasai is palpable as the elections approach. Political issues exacerbate rivalries between different communities and create a climate conducive to violent clashes. It is therefore essential to put in place preventive measures to avoid the escalation of these conflicts and guarantee the security of the populations concerned.

To respond to this problem, Jody Nkashama and Professor Augustin Mwendambale, historian of mentalities, discussed possible solutions. The general director of the Human Rights Research Institute (IRDH/Lubumbashi), Hubert Tshiswaka, also participated in this interview.

Among the preventive measures suggested, it is crucial to promote intercommunity dialogue and encourage peaceful coexistence between the different ethnic groups present in the region. It is essential to raise public awareness of the importance of tolerance and mutual respect, in order to prevent the prejudices and stigmatization that fuel intercommunal violence.

In addition, it is necessary to strengthen the presence of security forces in risk areas and establish increased surveillance to prevent any violent action. Collaboration between local authorities, civil society organizations and community leaders is also essential to promote peace and resolve conflicts peacefully.

Finally, it is appropriate to underline the importance of the role of the media in the prevention of inter-community violence. The media can play an active role in spreading messages of peace and encouraging dialogue between different communities. It is essential to promote balanced processing of information, avoiding contributing to the escalation of tensions and promoting mutual understanding.

In conclusion, faced with the intercommunal violence which is increasing in the DRC in the run-up to the elections, it is essential to act quickly and effectively to prevent these conflicts. Promoting dialogue, strengthening security, raising public awareness and the role of the media are all key elements in this approach.. Only a concerted and comprehensive approach can ensure the security of populations and guarantee peaceful and democratic elections.
