The capture of the town of Kidal by the Malian army, supported by Russian mercenaries from the Wagner paramilitary group, constitutes an undeniable victory for the Malian authorities. However, this raises many questions about future prospects.
From a military point of view, it was air strike power, with the use of drones and fighter planes, that made the difference. Malian forces were able to enter Kidal without encountering direct resistance. However, the rebels have not laid down their arms and plan to continue their fight with occasional attacks and guerrilla warfare. Now that the city is under the control of the Malian army, it will be crucial to maintain it in a hostile environment and to cope with this new form of combat.
In addition, the means deployed to take Kidal were impressive, with dozens of vehicles and considerable mobilization. This raises the question of the availability of resources and military presence in other regions of the country, particularly in the Center, where the jihadist threat persists.
The capture of Kidal also has a symbolic dimension, because the city is the cradle of independence movements that have marked the history of Mali for many years. While the victory is a source of satisfaction for many Malians, it calls into question eight years of painstaking attempts to implement the 2015 peace agreement and risks rekindling the separatist demands that the agreement aimed to resolve.
It is therefore crucial for the Malian authorities to propose a lasting political solution to bring peace to the country. This will require the involvement of all stakeholders and a collective will to stabilize the country, promote prosperity and emerge from the crisis in a sustainable manner.
