Members of the Sacred Union of the Nation of Grand Katanga recently made a strong statement calling on the government to take sanctions against alleged embezzlers at Gécamines, a state company. According to these elected officials, there would have been a “sell-out” of the vital interests of the DRC leading to misappropriation of funds. They demand that those responsible be brought to justice and punished before the December 2023 elections.
Gécamines, a state-owned company, has recently been at the center of accusations of embezzlement. The General Inspectorate of Finance revealed that the chairman of the Board of Directors and several executives had embezzled more than 10 million dollars. However, Gécamines denies these accusations.
Faced with these revelations, citizen movements and Gécamines workers mobilized in Lubumbashi to demand the opening of an investigation and sanction measures. According to them, it is essential to preserve the interests of the DRC and its workers.
This situation highlights the responsibility of the elected officials of Grand Katanga, who continue to denounce attacks on the country’s interests. Every day, Gécamines is the scene of demonstrations and protests, demonstrating the concern of workers and the local population.
It is therefore essential that the government takes firm measures to ensure transparency and justice in this alleged misappropriation case. Those allegedly responsible must be prosecuted and punished in order to restore trust and preserve the integrity of Gécamines. These actions are crucial for the future of the company and to ensure good economic governance in the country.
The deputies of the Sacred Union of the Nation of Grand Katanga showed determination by calling for sanctions and precautionary measures. Their commitment to transparency and the fight against corruption is commendable and deserves to be supported. Let us hope that their calls will be heard and that concrete actions will be taken to put an end to these alleged embezzlement at Gécamines. The DRC needs responsible management of its resources to ensure its development and the well-being of its population.
