Universal Health Coverage in the Democratic Republic of Congo: A step towards better health for all

The Ministry of Health, Hygiene and Prevention of the Democratic Republic of Congo recently organized a workshop aimed at the operationalization of the law on Universal Health Coverage. This initiative aims to guarantee access to health care for all citizens of the country, regardless of their economic situation.

The establishment of this Universal Health Coverage system requires a modification of the existing law, which sets the fundamental principles relating to the organization of Public Health. This modification was made through an ordinance-law, thus providing a solid legal basis for the implementation of Universal Health Coverage in the DRC.

During this workshop, experts from the Ministry of Health, Hygiene and Prevention identified the legal needs for the operationalization of the law, made participants aware of the importance of taking enforcement measures and identified the services involved in the implementation of this system.

The Minister of Health, Hygiene and Prevention underlined the importance of this initiative by declaring that the process of implementing Universal Health Coverage in the DRC is irreversible. This is a strong promise from Head of State Felix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, which aims to improve access to health care for all Congolese.

In the next steps, a technical commission will be established to accelerate the development and adoption of the necessary implementing measures. The objective is to guarantee rapid and effective implementation of Universal Health Coverage in the DRC.

The establishment of this Universal Health Coverage system is an important step towards improving the health of Congolese citizens. By providing equitable access to health care, regardless of economic situation, the DRC is committed to guaranteeing the fundamental right to health for all. It is a step towards a healthier and more equitable future for all Congolese people.
