Close to President Martin Fayulu, Serge Welo was a “tough guy” who was arrested several times during political demonstrations. He also stood alongside Étienne Tshisekedi during his contested swearing-in in 2011.

A man close to artists and loved by his family:
Beyond his political commitment, Serge Welo was also close to Congolese musical artists, who often quoted him in their songs. His older brother, Jean-Jacques Wondo, is an expert and analyst on socio-political issues in the DRC. On Facebook, the latter expressed his unconditional love and support for Serge Welo, even calling him a son. This relationship demonstrates the importance of family ties and mutual support in the fight for democracy.

A tragic death and a lasting legacy:
Serge Welo unfortunately died of a stroke during his stay in Brazzaville. He was awaiting evacuation to Europe to benefit from better medical care. His disappearance leaves a void in the Congolese political landscape and highlights the difficulties faced by defenders of democracy in the Democratic Republic of Congo. However, the legacy left by Serge Welo will endure, and his fight for justice and equality will continue to inspire many activists.
