New peace court in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo – MONUSCO

The United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) recently announced the construction of a new peace court in Goma, North Kivu province. This initiative is part of MONUSCO’s strategic priorities, which notably aim to combat impunity and strengthen state institutions.

The construction of this new judicial infrastructure is an important step in the implementation of these objectives. By allowing easier access to justice for the population of Goma, it will help fight impunity and promote peace and stability in the region.

In his speech during the inauguration ceremony, Omar Aboud, head of MONUSCO office in Goma, highlighted the importance of the construction of new judicial infrastructure in MONUSCO’s support to the Congolese authorities. He also expressed his satisfaction with the completion of this new building in a difficult security context.

The Goma peace court is the eighth judicial building constructed or rehabilitated by MONUSCO in the North Kivu province over the last five years. It offers suitable offices for judges and clerks, as well as a comfortable courtroom.

Albert Lukundji Omari, first president of the Court of Appeal of North Kivu, welcomed this initiative and called on other international partners to follow MONUSCO’s example by building other courts across the country.

This action is part of MONUSCO’s commitment to supporting institutions representing the rule of law in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2666.

The construction of this new peace court in Goma marks an important step forward in the fight against impunity in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Thanks to this judicial infrastructure, the population of Goma will be able to benefit from better access to justice, thus strengthening confidence in the judicial system and contributing to the construction of a more just and peaceful society. MONUSCO continues to support the Congolese government in its efforts to strengthen the judicial institution and promote stability in the country.
