Horrible murder in Horototo: two people found lifeless in a field
Horototo, a village located in the Watalinga chiefdom in Beni territory, was the scene of a shocking act of violence last Friday. Two people, a child and his father, were found dead in a field, brutally murdered with machetes.
The bodies of the victims were discovered by farmers in the region the day after the attack. According to Meleki Mulala, head of the new civil society in the Ruwenzori sector, this tragedy bears the mark of ADF fighters, a rebel group active in the region for many years.
Although Ugandan soldiers have been present in the area since November 2021, in joint operations with the Congolese army, the violence perpetrated by the ADF has not stopped. This attack is unfortunately only one of the many tragedies experienced by the Watalinga population.
In addition to the two victims found, three women who were taken hostage by the attackers managed to escape, but four other people are still missing. The authorities are continuing their search to find these people and shed light on this matter.
It is important to emphasize that the persistent insecurity in the Beni region has a devastating impact on the local population. Residents live in constant fear of violent attacks and kidnappings. More effective measures must be taken to ensure the security of citizens and end the impunity of armed groups.
The situation in Horototo is a poignant reminder of the need for international mobilization to support the North Kivu region and put an end to the violence that has raged there for too long. Congolese authorities must redouble their efforts to protect their citizens and work for stability in the region.
In conclusion, this tragic event in Horototo highlights the urgency of action to guarantee the security of local populations and put an end to the impunity of the armed groups operating in the region. It is essential that all stakeholders continue to collaborate to find lasting solutions to this humanitarian crisis. Every individual’s life matters, and it is our duty to ensure that no one is forgotten or abandoned in this fight for peace and security.
