“Morocco: A historic opportunity for economic development with the organization of the 2030 World Cup”

After decades of failed attempts, Morocco is being offered a new opportunity to host the FIFA World Cup in 2030, in collaboration with Spain and Portugal. This decision constitutes a real catalyst for the development of Moroccan infrastructure, with considerable economic and social benefits.

On the sporting front, Morocco plans to build its largest stadium in Benslimane, near Casablanca, in preparation for the competition. This project, which the government estimates at around 460 million euros, will be carried out over a period of three years, from 2025 to 2028. In addition to this new stadium, six other infrastructures located in Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, Agadir, Fez and Tangier will benefit from modernizations in order to host the 2025 African Cup of Nations and the 2030 World Cup.

Beyond the stadiums, other sectors will have to be developed to host this global event. Investments in transport, hotels, digital communications, particularly with the transition to 5G, will be necessary. These investments will boost the construction, banking and tourism sectors. According to estimates from Sogécapital Gestion, tourism revenue could reach more than 11 billion euros in 2030.

In addition to the economic benefits, the organization of the 2030 World Cup will also strengthen the country’s health infrastructure, which currently suffers from a deficit. This new development impulse will be a way for Morocco to accelerate its economic growth to combat persistent social and territorial inequalities. The country is targeting an annual growth rate of at least 6% by 2035, according to an official report published in 2021.

In terms of investments, Morocco hopes to attract national and international private capital to reverse the current dynamic where the State supports two-thirds of investments. The 2030 World Cup will therefore be a real engine for attracting investors and accelerating the country’s economic development.

In conclusion, the organization of the Football World Cup in 2030 by Morocco, alongside Spain and Portugal, offers a unique opportunity to develop the country’s infrastructure while stimulating economic growth. Major investments in stadiums, transport, hospitality and digital communications are needed to meet the demands of this global competition. This opportunity will also strengthen the country’s health infrastructure and attract private investment to accelerate long-term economic development.
