“Oicha recovers after the tragic attack: the resilience of a community in the face of adversity”

The day after the attack attributed to ADF rebels in the rural commune of Oicha, territory of Beni (North Kivu), the commune is gradually recovering from this tragic event. Despite a tense situation, residents are gradually resuming their activities.

Traffic has resumed in the town, although distrust still reigns among the population. Schools, meanwhile, remain closed for the moment, due to recent traumatic events.

Despite everything, some businesses have reopened their doors, offering some signs of normality during this difficult period. Pharmacies, for example, are once again accessible to residents in need of medication.

However, the usually bustling central market of Oicha has been strongly affected by the climate of fear and uncertainty that reigns in the commune. Only a few sellers dared to open their stalls, while residents, still in shock, are slowly recovering from this deadly attack.

Poignant scenes were observed in the town, notably residents picking up the few foodstuffs spared by the flames during the anger of the population at the food distribution site for the displaced. These gestures demonstrate the resilience and determination of the people of Oicha to survive despite the challenges.

The town remains marked by the deadly attack which left at least 26 victims, including 12 children. Residents are still in shock, while local authorities are trying to maintain calm and provide support to the population.

The military administrator of the Beni territory, Colonel Charles Ehuta Omeonga, appeals to the population not to succumb to fear and manipulation by the enemy. He underlines the importance of letting the security forces carry out their work and assures that investigations will be carried out to clarify the circumstances of the attack.

Discussions are underway between the authorities and civil society in Oicha to organize the funerals of the victims of this tragedy.

Despite the challenges they have faced, the population of Oicha has shown remarkable resilience. In adversity, she finds the strength to rebuild herself and resume her activities, thus testifying to the determination of the inhabitants to overcome obstacles and preserve their community.

The situation in the municipality of Oicha nevertheless remains worrying, and it is essential that the authorities continue to work to ensure the safety of the population and promote a return to normal life. Solidarity and support from civil society, humanitarian organizations and the international community are also crucial to help the people of Oicha recover from this ordeal and rebuild their future.
