“Kin-Elenda: The multi-sector development project that transforms Kinshasa into a resilient city”

The Kinshasa multi-sectoral development and urban resilience project, known as Kin-Elenda, is booming in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). With an initial disbursement of nearly $113 million, this ambitious project aims to improve the living conditions and socio-economic opportunities of poor and vulnerable neighborhoods in the Congolese capital.

According to Augustin Kabamba, responsible for evaluation at the Infrastructure Unit of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Works, the Kin-Elenda project has already produced concrete results in improving the living conditions of many people in Kinshasa. Targeted investments have been made to strengthen planning and urban management capacities, with particular emphasis on neighborhoods located on both sides of the N’djili River.

Thanks to this project, structuring infrastructures have been put in place, allowing residents to benefit from better access to basic services such as drinking water, electricity and roads. In addition, local investments have been made to promote employment and stimulate economic activity at the local level.

The Kin-Elenda project is based on the concept of “inclusive and resilient cities”, with an integrated approach that aims to strengthen urban resilience in the face of environmental, economic and social challenges. It intends to promote a gradual transformation of the urban environment by implementing interventions adapted to the specific needs of targeted neighborhoods.

The continued disbursement of the project is a positive indicator of its implementation and progress. Projections show that by June 2024, a total disbursement of US$212.5 million is expected to be achieved, which would demonstrate the continued commitment and drive to realize the project objectives.

In conclusion, the Kin-Elenda project represents a major initiative to improve the living conditions of Kinshasa residents and strengthen the city’s urban resilience in the face of the challenges it faces. Thanks to targeted investments and an integrated approach, this ambitious project offers a promising future for the Congolese capital and its inhabitants.
