“Gramping inflation in the DRC: what are the consequences for the economy and the purchasing power of households?”

Inflation continues to be a major concern in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in October 2023. According to the Central Bank of Congo (BCC), the weekly inflation rate reached 0.161% during the second week of the month, an increase compared to the previous week when it was 0.103%.

In its analysis, the BCC underlines that several categories of products contributed to this increase in inflation, in particular “Food products and non-alcoholic drinks”, “Housing, water, gas, electricity and other fuels”, “Goods and miscellaneous services”, “Transport” and “Restaurants and hotels”. These categories represent 65.21%, 15.03%, 7.23%, 5.43% and 4.84% of the overall index, respectively. Other sectors made marginal contributions.

More specifically, inflation is due to the increase in prices of basic necessities. For example, the price of mineral water has almost doubled in certain sales areas in the city of Kinshasa.

Cumulatively and year-on-year, the inflation rate stood at 18.442% and 21.605% respectively over the period analyzed.

It is therefore essential to closely monitor the evolution of inflation in the DRC, because this directly impacts the purchasing power of households and the economic stability of the country. The authorities must take adequate measures to control this inflation and maintain sustainable economic growth.
