“The historic meeting between Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby and Emmanuel Macron: the challenges of political transition and Franco-Chadian cooperation”

Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby was received with great fanfare by Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée this Wednesday. This meeting between the two heads of state aimed to address various subjects of common interest, notably the security situation in the sub-region and the continuation of the political transition underway in Chad.

During this meeting, Mahamat Idriss Déby insisted on the need to obtain diplomatic and financial support to guarantee the success of the transition in Chad. He recalled that his government had already fulfilled certain key stages of this process, such as the agreement with the political-military groups and the national dialogue. It now remains to organize the constitutional referendum in December and the elections next year.

The Chadian presidency underlined the importance of respecting all transition commitments and requested continued and substantial support from France. Indeed, the latter has a key role to play in the success of this transition period.

In addition to political issues, the meeting also addressed the humanitarian crisis caused by the massive influx of Sudanese refugees into Chad. The country is faced with limited resources and a lack of infrastructure to deal with this situation. Mahamat Idriss Déby therefore called on donors to provide support to help Chad manage this humanitarian crisis.

Regarding Franco-Chadian relations, they are described as friendly, regardless of the current context. However, Chad wishes to broaden the areas of cooperation with France beyond just the security dimension, particularly in the economic field.

This meeting between Mahamat Idriss Déby and Emmanuel Macron marks an important step in strengthening bilateral relations between France and Chad. It demonstrates the desire of the two countries to work together to ensure stability and development in the region.

It is therefore essential to support Chad in this critical transition period, by providing both political and financial support, but also by encouraging deeper cooperation in other key areas such as the economy. This will consolidate ties between the two countries and promote a better future for Chad and the entire region.
