Road accidents in North Kivu: the urgent call for prevention and responsibility for all

Road accidents are unfortunately a reality that affects many regions of the world, and the province of North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo is unfortunately no exception. Between January and August 2023, more than 150 people lost their lives and more than 800 others were injured in road accidents in this region. These alarming figures were communicated by the National Road Prevention Commission (CNPR), which calls for awareness and measures to avoid such tragedies.

During an interview with Radio Okapi, the communications officer of the CNPR in North Kivu, Lugine Zihalirwa, stressed the importance of raising drivers’ awareness of good driving practices. According to him, careful and responsible driving is essential to avoid accidents. He also recalled the importance of respecting the highway code, wearing a seat belt and maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles.

Beyond the individual responsibility of drivers, the CNPR also highlights the importance of improving road infrastructure. Roads in good condition and well maintained help reduce the risk of accidents. In addition, the CNPR calls on the authorities to strengthen road controls and severely punish dangerous behavior such as speeding, drunk driving and using the phone while driving.

Lugine Zihalirwa also highlights the importance of education and awareness among young drivers. The CNPR works with driving schools to train future drivers in good driving practices and road safety. It also organizes awareness campaigns in communities to inform the public about the risks associated with reckless driving and dangerous behavior.

In conclusion, the prevention of road accidents is a major issue which requires the mobilization of all the stakeholders concerned. It is essential that drivers behave responsibly and respect the highway code, that road infrastructure is improved and that control and enforcement measures are strengthened. Road safety must be a priority to avoid further tragedies on the roads of North Kivu and everywhere else.
