The NGO Reporters Without Borders recently announced its project to train media professionals in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Called “Media and Elections”, this project aims to prepare journalists for the upcoming electoral campaign as well as to fight against the violence and attacks to which they are often victims during this period.
The initiative by Reporters Without Borders follows numerous cases of violence and attacks against journalists during past elections in the DRC. The NGO therefore wishes to strengthen the skills of journalists in terms of electoral coverage and protection in the field.
This training project concerns not only Kinshasa, the capital, but also other cities in the country, such as Mbandaka, Goma and Lubumbashi. It aims to provide journalists with the necessary tools to practice their profession safely and to guarantee fair and transparent media coverage of upcoming elections.
During their visit to Kinshasa, members of Reporters Without Borders also took the opportunity to reiterate their call for the immediate release of journalist Stanis Bujakera, as well as all other journalists detained in the country.
This initiative by the NGO comes in addition to the numerous actions carried out by Reporters Without Borders around the world to defend press freedom and the safety of journalists. The organization, based in Paris, works tirelessly to promote freedom of expression and support journalists in their mission to inform the public objectively and independently.
In conclusion, Reporters Without Borders’ “Media and Elections” training project in the DRC demonstrates the importance given to the protection of journalists and the guarantee of fair media coverage during electoral periods. Thanks to this initiative, Congolese journalists will be better prepared and equipped to practice their profession in safer conditions, thus contributing to strengthening democracy and the rule of law in the country.
