“Kampala Geopolitics Conference 2023: fascinating debates on global geopolitical challenges”

The Kampala Geopolitics Conference 2023 began with strength and enthusiasm, sparking many exciting debates on the crucial geopolitical issues of our time. This prestigious conference, taking place October 17-19, brings together international experts and renowned intellectuals to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing our world.

The inaugural session, moderated by Dr. Susanne Conrad of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, focused on the future of Somalia after the withdrawal of ATMIS. Experts present, including General Osman Noor Soubagle of Djibouti, stressed the importance of maintaining international engagement in the region. They warned of the potentially destabilizing consequences of a hasty troop withdrawal, both for Somalia and the Horn of Africa as a whole.

During the second round table, entitled “African cultural soft power”, participants debated the importance of financing the cultural and creative industries. Ugandan filmmaker Barbra Atusasiire has called for more financial support from governments for these sectors. Musician Phina Mugerwa highlighted the vital role of women in promoting African culture, while Professor Philip Luswata called for the development of local talent.

The session devoted to the rush of great powers in Africa was marked by lively debates. Speakers praised the ability of African leaders to manage the divergent interests of China, the United States and Russia. They stressed the importance for Africa to preserve its independence and not get drawn into global geopolitical rivalries.

Finally, the question of economic inclusion and the need to bridge the digital divide gave rise to deep reflections. Experts highlighted the importance of proactive policies aimed at democratizing access to technology, particularly for women and young people. They also insisted on the importance of training the population in the use of digital tools, in order to allow everyone to benefit from the opportunities offered by the current technological revolution.

This first day of the Kampala Conference was rich in debates and exchanges of ideas. Participants brought in-depth analysis and paved the way for two more days of exciting discussions. The Kampala Geopolitics Conference continues to position itself as an essential forum for understanding and shaping current global geopolitical issues.
