UNHCR facilitates the repatriation of Congolese refugees from Angola to the DRC
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) recently established a facilitated repatriation process for Congolese refugees in Angola. This initiative aims to enable the return of people who fled the violence linked to the Kamuina Nsapu phenomenon in conditions of safety and dignity.
Thus, 82 Congolese refugees have already been repatriated by air to the DRC. These individuals voluntarily decided to return to their original environments after spending several years in exile. Among them, some have already managed to reach Kananga, in the province of Kasaï-Central, while others will be transported to Sankuru.
To facilitate their reintegration, UNHCR has put in place various support measures. Returnees receive an aid kit to support them in this transition, as well as access to reintegration programs. In addition, health centers and schools are built and rehabilitated in areas identified for the return of refugees, to facilitate their access to health care and education.
This repatriation process is part of a tripartite agreement signed between the UNHCR, the government of the DRC and that of Angola, thus demonstrating the commitment of the different parties to ensure the voluntary and secure return of Congolese refugees. .
Among the returnees, some express their joy at finally finding their family and their country of origin. This is the case of Marie Ngalula, who underlines the importance of this moment after having lived away from home for so long.
This repatriation process demonstrates the efforts made to resolve the humanitarian crisis caused by the violence in Kasai-Central. By allowing refugees to return home, UNHCR is helping to restore stability and cohesion to the Congolese community.
It is essential to emphasize that this repatriation process is carried out with respect for the rights and dignity of refugees, in accordance with international conventions on the protection of refugees.
In conclusion, the repatriation of Congolese refugees from Angola to the DRC, facilitated by UNHCR, constitutes an important step in resolving the humanitarian crisis in the Kasai-Central region. It demonstrates the commitment of the various parties to ensure the voluntary and safe return of refugees to their country of origin, with the necessary support for their reintegration and reconstruction.
