“The modernization of the Durba-Aru road in the Democratic Republic of Congo: a major challenge for the economic development of the region”

The modernization of road infrastructure is an essential issue for the economic and social development of a country. In the Haut-Uele province in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the mining company Kibali Gold recently rehabilitated the Durba-Aru road by transforming it into a dirt road. This initiative made it possible to improve the accessibility of the region and facilitate travel for residents and local economic actors.

Cyrille Mutombo, country director of Kibali Gold, recently called on the Congolese government to take responsibility by continuing to modernize this road by providing it with a layer of asphalt. In a statement during a press conference in Kinshasa, he underlined the importance of the involvement of several actors in the development of infrastructure, and in particular of the State which is responsible for developing roads.

The request from the local community of Haut-Uele for the asphalting of the Durba-Aru road shows the importance of this communication route for the economic development of the region. Asphalting would improve the durability and strength of the road, thus facilitating the transport of goods and the development of trade.

Cyrille Mutombo also recalled Kibali Gold’s contribution to local development, providing voluntary investments beyond regulatory obligations. He stressed that the company has already played its part by rehabilitating the dirt road, thus providing a solid basis for its continued modernization.

Cyrille Mutombo’s request highlights the importance of collaboration between the private sector and the government for the development of road infrastructure. By working together, they can play a vital role in improving the accessibility and connectivity of regions, thereby promoting the economic and social development of the country.

It is therefore crucial that the Congolese government takes this request into account and continues work to modernize the Durba-Aru road, by asphalting this essential communication route. This will stimulate economic development in the region, improve the living conditions of local populations and strengthen connectivity with other regions of the country. The development of road infrastructure is a long-term strategic investment, which will contribute to the growth and sustainable development of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
