The “Wazalendo” regain control of Kitshanga after intense clashes with the M23
In a series of clashes which lasted 72 hours, the “Wazalendo”, a self-defense group based in North Kivu, managed to regain control of the strategic city of Kitshanga. The fighting was fierce and ultimately resulted in the victory of the “Wazalendo” over the M23 rebels.
Videos of the reconquest of Kitshanga by the “Wazalendo” quickly circulated on social networks, sparking enthusiastic reactions from the local population. Residents of Kitshanga welcomed the “Wazalendo” with cheers, expressing relief at the resumption of security in their community.
However, despite this victory, concern persists about what will happen next. Clashes are still ongoing between the M23 and the “Wazalendo” in the Burungu region, and heavy and light weapons fire has also been reported in Kibumba, disrupting traffic on the RN2 between Goma and Rutshuru.
The spokesperson for the military governor of North Kivu denounced the M23 attacks, saying they violated the ceasefire decreed by the region’s heads of state. He also warned that the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC) reserve the right to retaliate in the event of provocation.
These clashes once again underline the fragility of the security situation in this region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Armed groups continue to sow terror and hinder the government’s stabilization efforts.
The reconquest of Kitshanga by the “Wazalendo” offers some hope to the local population, but this is not enough to guarantee long-term security. More concerted and sustainable measures must be taken to end the cycle of violence and allow communities to live in peace.
Pending further developments, it is essential to stay informed on the situation in North Kivu and support efforts to bring stability to the region. Resolving this crisis will require the commitment of all stakeholders, both national and international. Only in this way can we hope for a peaceful future for the Democratic Republic of Congo.
