“Online disinformation: the fight for truth in Slovakia”

Article: “Online disinformation: the battle for truth”

In our increasingly connected world, information has become a precious commodity, but it has also become a formidable weapon in the spread of disinformation. Indeed, with the rise of the internet and social networks, it is increasingly difficult to disentangle fact from fiction. A real battle for the truth is taking place on the web, and Slovakia is no exception.

During the recent parliamentary election campaign in Slovakia, disinformation reached alarming levels. Thousands of misleading or downright false messages have flooded social networks and were relayed by dubious information sites.

This misinformation takes different forms, from fake news to conspiracy theories to political propaganda. The main actors of this disinformation are often politicians themselves, who use these tactics to win votes and manipulate public opinion.

A striking example of this manipulation is former Prime Minister Robert Fico, leader of the SMER party, known for his pro-Russian positions. He regularly uses social networks to spread false information and populist speeches, which allows him to gain popularity and manipulate public opinion.

But sources of disinformation are not limited to Slovak politicians. Russia, known for its global disinformation campaigns, is also a major player in Slovakia. The Russian embassy in the country is a veritable relay of disinformation, using social networks to spread false information and propagate its own narrative.

This misinformation has serious consequences. It sows confusion among voters, who have difficulty distinguishing truth from falsehood. It can also influence election results, by manipulating public opinion and favoring certain political parties.

It is therefore crucial to combat misinformation online. Governments must adopt strict measures to regulate social media and punish those who spread false information. Citizens should also be vigilant and check sources before sharing information online.

The battle for truth is crucial to the sustainability of our democracy. We cannot let misinformation take over. It is time to mobilize and defend the truth, in order to protect our society from the harmful influence of online misinformation.
