Rebalancing the Sino-Congolese partnership: a win-win vision for the Democratic Republic of Congo
By Siméon Isako
In a speech to international journalists in New York, the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Tshisekedi, addressed the issue of revisiting the Chinese contract. He underlined the crucial role of the General Inspectorate of Finance (IGF) headed by Jules Alingete, in the evaluation of this partnership. According to the latter, Chinese companies made nearly $10 billion in profits, while the DRC made less than $1 billion. A blatant imbalance which required a revision of the contract.
During his recent visit to China, President Tshisekedi was pleased to see that Chinese partners were willing to listen and understand the DRC’s vision. They recognized that the partnership must be balanced and mutually beneficial. Thus, Chinese companies were enthusiastic about the proposal to revisit the contract in order to guarantee the interests of the DRC. This is a new adventure that aims to avoid any frustration on either side.
Jules Alingete played a leading role in the revisitation of the Chinese contract. As director of the IGF, he was uncompromising in the face of unfair practices by Chinese companies. He denounced neo-colonialism and the imbalance of the contract which largely favored Chinese interests to the detriment of the DRC. According to the IGF report, planned infrastructure investments have not been made, while Chinese companies have already made significant profits.
The revisitation of the Sino-Congolese contract aims to restore this balance and ensure that the DRC also benefits from this partnership. This is an essential step for the economic development and sovereignty of the country.
In conclusion, the revision of the Sino-Congolese contract is an opportunity for the Democratic Republic of Congo to renegotiate fairer terms and establish a win-win partnership with China. Thanks to the leadership of Jules Alingete and the will of President Tshisekedi, it is possible to rectify the imbalances of the past and build a more promising future for the DRC.
