Denis Mukwege: uncertainty hangs over his candidacy for the 2023 presidential election in the DRC

Less than two weeks before the closing of candidacies for the presidential election at the end of 2023 in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the candidacy of Doctor Denis Mukwege remains uncertain. Winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018, Mukwege raised the hopes of many citizens when he received a sum of $100,000, raised by ordinary contributors, to finance his candidacy.

If Doctor Mukwege has not yet given a definitive answer, those around him remain optimistic. Positive signals are emerging, both behind the scenes and in the media, where his supporters are working to mobilize around his candidacy. Primaries within a section of civil society have also been organized to nominate a common presidential candidate, and there are possibilities of rallying behind Mukwege.

A program structured around 12 pillars

If Mukwege decides to run, his program is based on 12 pillars. Among the main ones, we find peace, security and defense, with a desire to fight against the balkanization of the country and to highlight the challenges of the region. Justice and the rule of law are also important pillars, reflecting Dr. Mukwege’s fights and positions against impunity.

An application marked by challenges

However, some critics consider Mukwege to be the man of the West, pointing to his extensive foreign support and funding from abroad. They question his notoriety in the DRC, arguing that he is better known outside the country. However, it is difficult to accurately establish its popularity levels.

Among the challenges that Mukwege could face if he runs for office, the question of his security during the electoral campaign is paramount. Currently, it is the United Nations Mission in the DRC which ensures his protection, but this could be called into question if he enters the political arena.

The deadline for submitting applications is October 8, so it will be decisive in knowing the final decision of Doctor Mukwege. The results of the presidential election will make it possible to measure its real popularity among the Congolese population.

In conclusion, Denis Mukwege’s candidacy for the 2023 presidential election in the DRC still raises many hopes and questions. Its possible entry into the political race and the promotion of its program based on peace, security, justice and the rule of law represent important issues for the future of the country. It remains to be observed how the situation will evolve between now and the close of nominations and during the presidential election.
