Request the extension of the MONUSCO mandate and fight against impunity for crimes in the Grand Kasai area
In a statement during a mass in memory of the victims of the security crisis in the Kasai area, the National Association of Victims of Congo (ANVC) requested a one-year extension of the mandate of the UN Mission for stabilization in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO). ANVC President Mhyrhand Mulumba stressed that the continued presence of MONUSCO will be crucial in meeting the security challenge and ensuring adequate management of the country’s electoral and post-electoral phase.
With Congo about to enter its fourth electoral cycle, it is essential to have a secure environment for the holding of elections and to guarantee stability in the post-election period. MONUSCO plays a crucial role in the country’s security and supports the Congolese authorities in resolving conflicts and protecting civilians.
Alongside the request for extension of MONUSCO’s mandate, the ANVC also stressed the importance of fighting against impunity for serious crimes committed in the Grand Kasai area. Mhyrhand Mulumba called for bringing the perpetrators of these crimes to justice and ensuring compensation measures for the victims.
The crisis linked to the Kamuina Nsapu phenomenon has caused enormous suffering and disruption in the Kasai region. It is crucial to end impunity and ensure that those responsible are held to account. This will restore confidence in the rule of law and promote reconciliation in the region.
The request to extend the mandate of MONUSCO and the need to fight against impunity are crucial issues for the stability and development of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is essential that the Congolese authorities, in collaboration with the international community, take concrete measures to ensure the security of citizens and the pursuit of justice.
In a context where many security and political challenges loom on the horizon, it is imperative to strengthen the presence of MONUSCO and provide continued support to ensure free and fair elections and promote national reconciliation. The international community must also mobilize to support efforts to combat impunity and reconstruction in the Greater Kasai area.
In short, the extension of MONUSCO’s mandate and the fight against impunity are two key elements to guarantee lasting stability in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is important that the international community responds positively to this request and continues to support the country in its quest for peace, justice and development.
