“Shocking revelation: former prefect Pierre Kayondo suspected of having organized the 1994 genocide in Rwanda”

The 1994 genocide in Rwanda is one of the darkest events in contemporary history. Hundreds of thousands of people, mainly Tutsis, were massacred in an unprecedented act of violence. In the midst of this carnage, Pierre Kayondo, a former prefect and deputy, is suspected of having played an active role in organizing the exterminations in the Gitarama region.

The investigation into Pierre Kayondo was opened following a complaint from the Collective of Civil Parties of Rwanda, an association which tracks suspected genocidaires in France. Thanks to their efforts, they traced Kayondo to Le Havre, where he had lived for many years. They then collected testimonies in Rwanda, which established his involvement in the training of interahamwe militia groups, supply of weapons and participation in meetings.

But that’s not all. Kayondo also allegedly played a key role in the management of Radio des Mille Collines, a station that played a major role in propaganda and incitement to hatred during the genocide. His responsibilities in this case are serious and demonstrate the importance of bringing to justice those involved in such acts of violence.

The arrest of Pierre Kayondo is an important step in the pursuit of justice for the victims of the Rwandan genocide. However, there is still much work to be done. There are still around thirty Rwandan files awaiting investigation in France. It is crucial that the perpetrators of these crimes are brought to justice and that survivors receive redress.

The 1994 genocide in Rwanda will forever remain a black stain in the history of humanity. But in prosecuting suspected genocidaires and obtaining justice for the victims, we strive not to forget and to pay tribute to those who lost their lives.
