“Togo: a model of pacifism and sovereignty in West Africa”

Article: Illustrations of pacifist and sovereignist politics in Togo

Togo, a country of peace that refuses war

Togo, a small country in West Africa, is often considered an example of political stability in a region often shaken by armed conflicts. In his speech to the UN, the Togolese foreign minister proudly recalled that his country has never waged war against its neighbors and has never served as a rear base for aggression against other nations. This pacifist and sovereignist position underlines Togo’s refusal to engage in conflicts, whatever the reasons.

Neutral and constructive mediation

Since the 1980s, Togo has positioned itself as a neutral mediator in African conflicts. President Faure Gnassingbé continued this tradition, organizing meetings between the belligerents to promote the peaceful resolution of conflicts. His desire for dialogue and compromise was particularly visible during the crisis in Mali last year, where he refrained from sanctioning the putschists and contributed to the release of Ivorian soldiers detained by the Malian authorities. This active and constructive mediation reflects Togo’s desire to promote peace and stability on the African continent.

A clear position against foreign military interventions

This pacifist speech is also accompanied by a clear position from Togo against foreign military interventions in the countries of the region. While the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) threatens to intervene militarily in Niger, Togo stands out by firmly expressing its opposition to this option. This position underlines Togo’s resistance to any foreign interference and its desire to preserve its sovereignty.

Opposition criticism

However, this pacifist and sovereignist posture also sparked criticism from the Togolese opposition. According to her, these statements aim to divert attention from the country’s internal political situation, notably the fourth term of President Gnassingbé and the absence of dates for the next elections as the legislature ends in December. However, these criticisms cannot obscure the positive role that Togo plays within ECOWAS and its contribution to regional stability.

In conclusion, Togo stands out for its pacifist and sovereignist position, affirming its refusal of war and foreign military interventions. Despite criticism from the opposition, the country continues to play a constructive role in resolving conflicts in West Africa.
