Institutional crisis in Tanganyika: Civil society activists are concerned about the continued closure of the provincial assembly

The institutional crisis shaking the province of Tanganyika in the Democratic Republic of Congo is causing serious concern among civil society activists. Indeed, since May 12, the provincial assembly of Tanganyika has been closed by decision of the Deputy Prime Minister of the Interior, in order to prevent possible disturbances to public order.

This closure also led to a political crisis, particularly in the run-up to the September parliamentary session. The national deputies of Tanganyika have tried to find a solution to this institutional crisis, but their efforts have so far remained unanswered.

A fact-finding mission carried out by the Senate last July was also set up to assess the situation and obtain the reopening of the provincial assembly. However, civil society activists have not received information on the outcome of this approach.

Concern is growing all the more as the September parliamentary session is mainly focused on the budgetary aspect. This situation of closure of the provincial assembly therefore risks depriving the population of control over the provincial executive.

It is important to remember that this institutional crisis arose following tensions between the provincial government and the Tanganyika assembly. The Deputy Prime Minister of the Interior then took the decision to close the assembly in order to maintain public order.

Faced with this worrying situation, it is essential that all stakeholders engage in constructive discussions to find a peaceful solution and restore the functioning of the Tanganyika provincial assembly. Democracy and citizen participation are fundamental pillars to ensure the harmonious development of a region.

It is therefore imperative to continue to closely monitor the evolution of this crisis and to maintain pressure on the competent authorities so that they take effective measures to restore democratic order in the province of Tanganyika. The population expects concrete answers and concrete actions to guarantee transparency and good governance in the region.
