“Sustainable cocoa: Ivory Coast is preparing for traceability to meet growing consumer demand”

Sustainable cocoa and traceability have become crucial topics in the chocolate industry. One year before the implementation of new European regulations prohibiting the importation of cocoa from deforested areas, the Ivorian Coffee and Cocoa Council has taken measures to set up an effective traceability system.

Ivory Coast’s goal is to be classified as a country at low risk of deforestation by the European Commission, allowing it to continue exporting its cocoa to Europe. To achieve this objective, the Coffee and Cocoa Council worked on the traceability of Ivorian cocoa. Currently, 70% of cocoa can be traced, but by the end of 2024, the goal is to be able to trace all cocoa.

However, setting up such a traceability system is complex and expensive. This requires the registration of planters and the installation of digital terminals in cocoa cooperatives. Despite these difficulties, the European Union is committed to supporting the industry in the transition to sustainable cocoa.

The issue for cocoa importers in Europe is whether Ivory Coast will be able to meet the proposed timetable and supply sustainable cocoa from 2024/2025. Some importers could anticipate these constraints by entering into futures contracts as early as November/December, to ensure a sustainable cocoa supply as soon as possible.

Sustainable and traceable cocoa has become a major concern for the chocolate industry. Consumers are increasingly concerned about the environmental impact of their purchases and are demanding responsible products. The establishment of an effective traceability system will make it possible to meet this growing demand and promote environmentally friendly cocoa production.

In conclusion, Côte d’Ivoire is preparing for the implementation of European regulations on sustainable cocoa and traceability. The Café Cacao Council is doing everything it can to ensure the traceability of Ivorian cocoa, but there is still work to be done. The chocolate industry will need to demonstrate anticipation and commitment to meet consumer expectations in terms of sustainability and traceability.
