Education in the DRC: encouraging results but persistent challenges for gender equality

Education in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is receiving special attention for the 2022-2023 school year. With a success rate of 87%, the director of the Maniema 1 educational province, Séraphin Mokito Gaunda, is delighted with the results obtained in this entity. However, he emphasizes that the 13% failure rate is mainly due to the low attendance rate of girls at school.

During the annual performance review of the actions carried out, which brought together numerous educational stakeholders, several issues were identified. Participants particularly deplored the consequences of free education, which led to untimely dismissals of students. They also stressed the need to provide textbooks to new schools created to support the growing population.

Following these findings, recommendations were made to improve the situation. Among them, the strengthening of mechanisms to avoid expulsions of students, the sending of additional school textbooks by the national government and the installation of a monitoring committee to ensure the execution of the recommendations.

The provincial minister of Primary, Secondary and Technical Education (EPST) of Maniema, Selemani Lungundu, assured that the provincial government would do everything possible to collaborate effectively and support these initiatives.

This annual review brings new impetus to the education system in the DRC and highlights the importance of personnel management in educational establishments.

It is essential to continue to closely monitor the development of education in the DRC, in particular the efforts made to improve access to school for all children, regardless of their gender, and to guarantee optimal conditions learning. The formation of monitoring committees and the allocation of adequate resources are essential measures to ensure the success of these initiatives.
