Rwandan aggression in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to wreak humanitarian havoc, as shown in the recent “White Paper” presented by the Congolese government. The figures are alarming: more than 2.39 million internally displaced people in the province of North Kivu and 1.5 million citizens of voting age deprived of registration for the upcoming elections.
The aggression, carried out by the M23 under the cover of the Rwandan army (RDF), not only resulted in a major humanitarian crisis, but also had devastating consequences on education and health. Thousands of children had to drop out of school, schools were deserted, occupied or destroyed. In addition, 67 health areas were affected, jeopardizing access to care for local populations.
This is not the first time that the DRC has suffered such aggression from Rwanda. The evidence presented in the “White Paper” clearly demonstrates the involvement of the Rwandan army in these criminal activities, aiming not only to keep the east of the country in instability, but also to plunder its resources for many years.
It is essential that the international community becomes aware of this situation and acts to put an end to Rwandan aggression in the DRC. It is time to support the Congolese government’s efforts to restore peace, protect citizens’ rights and rebuild the regions devastated by this conflict.
