The DRC and the ICGLR join forces to promote peace and development in the Great Lakes region.

The Deputy Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Christophe Lutundula, recently had an important meeting with João Samuel Caholo, executive secretary of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR). The discussions mainly focused on the Regional Forum on the implementation of the ICGLR strategy on artisanal and small-scale gold, which is currently taking place in Kinshasa.

In addition to this event, the two officials also addressed the issue of the security situation in the DRC and the Great Lakes region. João Samuel Caholo stressed the need to work together to put an end to the cyclical conflicts that affect eastern Congolese territory and the entire region. He also recalled the ICGLR’s commitment to supporting the elections scheduled for December in the DRC.

The ICGLR, established in 2008, is a regional organization that aims to promote peace and sustainable development in the Great Lakes region. Made up of twelve permanent member states, including Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania, the ICGLR seeks to establish good neighborly agreements and implement put in place action programs to end conflicts and promote peace, stability, security, democracy and development in the region.
