The synergy of unions of veterinary doctors and technicians in Congo recently organized a sit-in in front of the Ministry of Finance in Kinshasa to demand an improvement in their working conditions. The demands include mechanization at the base salary, alignment with the risk premium, increase and budgetary corrections, as well as the opening of a specific budget line for veterinary technicians. Health professionals, administrators and inspectors expressed their dissatisfaction with the Minister of Finance, Nicolas Kazadi, and threatened to continue their strike if their demands are not met.
According to Victor Okito Lokanga, head of the pediatric department of the Barumbu mother and child center, the Head of State would have given the order to respond favorably to the demands, but no concrete action has been taken until now. The strikers claim that Nicolas Kazadi is blocking all processes. They gave the government an ultimatum, which expires this week, to address their concerns. In the event of no response, they will continue their strike and seek other means to obtain satisfaction.
This strike has already lasted more than three weeks and is affecting health services across the country. Members of the synergy of unions of veterinary doctors and technicians in Congo appealed for the solidarity of other health professionals and encouraged the white coats to join their movement if no solution is found quickly.
This situation highlights the challenges faced by health professionals in the DRC and underlines the importance of improving their working conditions to guarantee quality care to the population. It is essential that the government responds to the legitimate demands of these unions in order to prevent a deterioration of the situation and guarantee access to health care for all Congolese.
