Gold traceability at the heart of concerns during the Regional Forum on gold mining in Kinshasa
The Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sama Lukonde, recently appealed to member states of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) to strengthen the traceability of gold in the region. This call was made at the opening of the Regional Forum on gold exploitation held in Kinshasa.
The traceability of gold is a major issue in the trade of this raw material, making it possible to ensure more responsible and ethical trade. Implementing traceability measures also helps promote transparency in artisanal gold mining and trading.
The forum, organized by the ICGLR Secretariat and the Congolese government, aims to implement a strategy for artisanal and small-scale gold mining in the Great Lakes region. Participants are invited to discuss and find solutions for the effective implementation of this strategy, in order to promote peace, security and development in the region.
The Minister of Mines, Antoinette N’Samba, underlined the importance of these meetings to take stock of the efforts made by each Member State to improve transparency and the responsible supply chain in the extraction and trade of minerals. artisanal gold. She also regretted the attacks suffered by the DRC from certain member states of the ICGLR.
Since December 7, 2018, the ICGLR and its member states have been committed to implementing a strategy for artisanal and small-scale gold mining. This strategy was adopted during the 5th meeting of ICGLR ministers responsible for mines.
