“Luis Rubiales resigns from the presidency of the Spanish Football Federation: the world of women’s football shaken by controversy”

Luis Rubiales, former president of the Spanish Football Federation, has announced his resignation following the controversy sparked by an incident during the celebration of the Spanish women’s team’s world title. This decision comes after several weeks of controversy and international criticism.

In a letter published by national media, Rubiales explained the reasons for his resignation. He said he did not want Spanish football to suffer the damage of a disproportionate campaign launched against it. He also referred to the sanctions imposed by FIFA and the legal proceedings initiated against him, which would prevent him from returning to his position.

Rubiales’ resignation was welcomed by many Spanish personalities and politicians. Secretary of State for Sports Victor Francos said Rubiales had made the right decision and that it was what Spanish citizens expected of him. The Minister for Equality, Irene Montero, simply wrote on social networks “It’s over”, thus taking up the slogan used by Jennifer Hermoso and her teammates to express their protest.

Rubiales’ resignation also raises the question of appointing a new coach for the Spanish women’s team. Jorge Vilda, close to Rubiales, was fired by the federation and replaced by Montse Tomé, a former assistant. The new coach will have to quickly remobilize the players in order to end the strike which was called following the incident and to prepare for the next international matches.

This case highlights the issues of respect and equality in the world of sport, particularly in women’s football. It also highlights the need for awareness and a change in mentality to put an end to inappropriate and sexist behavior.

It now remains to be seen how the Spanish Football Federation will manage this crisis and ensure that such situations do not occur again in the future.
